Creatures

Every shadow creature is brought into existence in the Tangible Realm by way of a distinct shadow symbol formed by its caster. While every shadow creature of a specific type bears close resemblance to others of its kind, each caster’s creature possesses its own unique traits such as colors and size. On every shadow creature’s body there is a shadow spiral, a twisting spiral of triangles, slender and defined at the center, wider and fading at the exterior. These spirals illuminate just before a shadow creature dissipates to return to the Shadow Realm.

All casters are capable of summoning all known shadow creatures, so long as they can form their hands and fingers into the required shape, an act which sometimes takes diligent practice and repetition, particularly for those that are more complex. Listed below are some of the shadow creatures found in Journey to Torcia, Book 1 of the Shadow Casters series.

Shreakle – Similar to an eagle from the Tangible Realm, but predominantly black with other streaks of dark colors on its body depending on the caster, and a bright orange beak. Its dive is faster than any creature in the Tangible Realm and it can send gusts of wind and shadowy mist by flapping its wings. It has a pair of shadow spirals on the front of either wing. The shreakle is a favorite cast of Kaito’s.

Shadow Hound – A hairy dark black canine with tan or white points above its friendly eyes. It has a short, stubby tail that wiggles back and forth along with the rest of its haunches when excited. It is distinguished from other shadow hounds and dogs from the Tangible Realm by unique colored-tongues, usually purple, green, or blue. Its shadow spiral is found on its back. Sumi’s shadow hound is her closest companion.

Komodon – A large four-legged reptilian, with dark scaly skin often carrying a uniquely colored hue and shimmering eyes. Its tail splits at the end into two sharpened points that are typically yellow but can vary. Its shadow spiral is located on its back. The Komodon is Nigel’s preferred cast.

Panghordra – Resembles a squatty two-footed anteater with front arms that hardly reach one another. It has large dark eyes, short and stubby fur, and a long hollow snout pointing erectly off the front of its face with a lengthy silver-grey tongue inside, though normally only the tip of its tongue is visible. The panghordra is extremely valuable and unique because its saliva contains healing properties for both humans and shadow creatures, allowing it to heal wounds by licking them, though they can only produce limited quantities at a time and must practice and be trained to enhance their skill. Its shadow spiral is on its upper chest just below the neck.

Messenger Bat – A vital cast for all shadow casters. The messenger bat is about twice the size of typical bats living in the Tangible Realm and usually possesses a variety of dark colors in varying patterns, unique to its caster. Along with wide yellow glowing eyes and muscular wings, it has strong feet well equipped for holding messages or objects for delivery to others. The messenger bat can read its caster’s memories to deliver messages to any person the caster has ever met in any place the caster has every visited. It also possesses the distinct ability to fly through solid walls, taking the packages in its grasp along with it. Its shadow spiral is on its back.

Champiran – A black-furred, monkey-like creature with yellowish eyes that are massive in comparison to its small head. It has pointed ears that stand erect and is small enough to perch on its caster’s shoulder. It is known for being crafty, sneaky, and deceptive. Its shadow spiral can be found on its chest.

Ganchu – A rodent that stands about a half a meter tall on its hind legs. It has a pointed face and large eyes, diamond-shaped nose, round ears, long whiskers, and a mouth that appears to turn up in a grin, giving it a friendly appearance. Its tail is like a chipmunk’s, but has a dark-red beady clover shape on the end, leading many to believe the ganchu brings about good luck. The ganchu is highly distinct because it possesses elemental abilities such as fire, lightning, ice, water, and others that it can blast out of its paws and tail. Casters often use the ganchu to start fires for cooking, to cool or wash items, or even to jumpstart a faulty caster’s beam. The distinct clover-shaped end of its tail is where the shadow spiral is located.

Gazer – Stands about a meter tall on skinny giraffe-like legs and an elongated neck coming off its small body. The gazer has a pointed face with stern and ever-focused eyes, along with a large velvety nose, and a long, whip-like yellow tail. The rest of its body covered in dark fur. The gazer is known as a mystic shadow creature because it can emit blasts of telekinetic energy to pick up and move objects out of reach as well as launch shadowy mist from its head. The shadow spiral is located about halfway up its long, skinny neck. The gazer is a favorite cast of Sumi’s.

Panthra – Very similar to a panther from the Tangible Realm, but distinguished with streaks of color across its body, usually red or purple, and bright narrow eyes of unique colors. The panthra is strong and agile, able to swipe away attacks with its claws. Its shadow spiral can be found on its back. The panthra is one of Kaito’s preferred casts.

Spyndler – When unfurled from it’s ball-like form, the spyndler looks like a mix between a hedgehog and porcupine but with a long tail that ends in a club-like knot of spikes. It can move quickly when it balls up to either dodge or crash into things as an attack and can also shoot its quills at opponents. The shadow spiral is on its club tail. The spynder is a cast that Sumi frequently summons.

Luprinon – Commonly known as the “demon dog”, the luprinon is a canine shadow creature with far less defined form than most. Rather than distinguished body parts, the luprinon looks like an all-black wolf-shaped silhouette with glowing red eyes. Its tail is long and pointed and it has a row of pointed knobs along its back. Considered an advanced cast, the luprinon is known for being one of the most volatile and difficult to control. Its shadow spiral is on the back of its neck.

Wolfverrin – A large and muscular mammalian like with enormous claws on all four of its paws, a wide face, and sharp teeth, like a bear, wolf, and badger all combined into one. Capable of standing and walking on its hind legs, the wolfverrin is further distinguished by front paws with translucent white pads that can illuminate then shoot powerful blasts of shadow at its foes. The shadow spiral on its chest is revealed when it stands to launch the formidable attack from its paw pads.

Shadow Slug – Known as the weakest of all shadow creatures, the shadow slug looks a lot like a large snail from the Tangible Realm. It is a slimy creature with tentacles ending in knobby eyes and protected by a hard shell where its shadow spiral is located. Slow in both speed and wit, it is deemed largely ineffective. Because the shadow symbol required to cast it is similar to that of more powerful casts, Nigel has been known to accidentally cast the shadow slug instead of his intended creature.

Shadduck – A wiry little avian with a dark feather body, a red bill, scrawny wings, wild eyes, and a wobbly stance, the shadduck is the brunt of many jokes among shadow casters. Its shadow spiral is found on the top of its head. Unfortunately, it is summoned by a shadow symbol that is very close to other more useful birds, so mistake-prone casters like Nigel are known to accidentally cast it from time to time.
