Sumi was discovered west of Central by Master Toshio when she was five years old, abandoned and alone, but guarded by a shadow hound companion, revealing her as a shadow caster. Despite attempts to find her parents and where she came from, Toshio was unsuccessful and Sumi, either too frightened or traumatized to share, was brought back to Central.

Once there, Toshio acted not only as her trainer, but also a father figure as she was brought up in the Legion of Shadow Casters (LoSC) with her peers Kaito and Nigel. Sumi is kind and compassionate, but also carries a fiery personality and a competitive nature. Whatever she remembers of her past, she keeps to herself, now considering Central her home and LoSC her family. Sumi’s friends often tease her for her uncommon practice of naming all her shadow creatures, but she views it as essential to bond with them. Her shadow hound, who she calls Ranger, is her dearest companion.
